PostHeaderIcon Player Spotlight: Dorin Dickerson

Most draft sites only spotlight 1st and maybe 2nd round prospects, but this site is all about Bengals draft needs not the entire NFL. It's no secret the Bengals will be looking to take a Tight End in the early rounds of the draft. Most of Bengals nation is divided, some want Gresham in the 1st with hopes he will be the next Antonio Gates or Tony Gonzalez. Others would like to wait until the 3rd or so and grab someone like Anthony McCoy. Then the others want Chase Coffman to be the guy and just take a blocking TE late in the draft. The problem is no one knows if Coffman will be able to get on the field this year. Another solution I've come up with that I haven't heard many talk about is draft Dorin Dickerson if he's there in the 3rd and grab a blocking college free agent TE.

Dorin Dickerson is undersized at 6-2, 230 lbs. That said he's considered to be a better blocker coming out of college than Chase Coffman was. I know that's not saying much. Dickerson ran an amazing 4.40 forty at the NFL Combine and had a 43.5 inch vertical jump which is extremely high. He also did 24 reps of 225 lbs on the bench which was 4th highest among all TE's even though most have about 30-40 lbs on him. Bottom line is he is an exceptional athlete and has excellent hands on top of it.

Now some will argue no way on this pick we already have a good athlete that is known as a pass catching TE. I like Chase and hope he is the man at TE, but if he isn't Dickerson could be an insurance policy to develop as our pass catching TE. Now here's what really attracts me to this pick in the 3rd, if Chase Coffman ends up being all we think he can be at the TE position we simply switch Dickerson to WR where we also only have 1 proven commidity in Chad. Dickerson has the ability and versatility to play WR, he did so at the Senior Bowl and looked good doing it. He's obviously got the speed and can get up there vertically. For a WR he would have very good size and can go over the middle of the field. He could be our man to stretch the middle and take coverage away from the outside giving Chad and Antonio Bryant 1on1 matchups.

So Basically this is a guy we could do a number of things with. If Chase doesn't work out or can't get over his injuries we could put 20 lbs on Dickerson and make him our receiving TE. Even better if Chase works out, Dickerson becomes the 3rd and maybe even eventually the number 2 WR. With his size I could easily see him in a TJ role, but with 4.4 speed and a 43.5 inch vertical. Either way at TE or WR, in the red zone you'd have to think he would strike fear in defenses with that size and vertical jumping ability. I'm just trying to present some other options and think outside the box a little, but if this were to happen our 1st and 2nd round picks could open up to whatever we want them to.
