PostHeaderIcon Line Depth

In the AFC North you need to be able to do two things. Run the ball and stop the run. Really you need to do those things throughout the entire NFL. Even with all the teams going pass happy I believe to have consistent success in the NFL you have to be able to run it and play good defense. The Saints won the Super Bowl last year over the Colts, in the game the Saints were able to run the ball and the Colts weren't. This enabled the Saints defense to sit back in coverage the entire game without any real threat of being burned by the run. On the other side the Colts had to respect the Saints running game and were unable to sit back on the pass. That lead to the Saints holding the Lombardi Trophy and Payton Manning having a 1-1 record in Super Bowls.

There are alot of debates about where the Bengals should spend their first round pick. There are plenty of good arguments with lots of points. One thing no one should have an argument against is if the Bengals select a lineman on either side of the ball. Football is won and lost in the trenches. Whether your a running team or passing team on offense you need to be good up front for it to work. On defense, a good D line can shut down a run and disrupt the passing game by getting to the QB.

The Bengals are currently pretty good on the line on both sides of the ball. So why use a 1st round pick on a lineman? Simple you can never have too many good players on either line. The Bengals are one Domata Peko injury away from being average against the run. They are one Antwan Odom injury away from having a minimal pass rush. On offense they are a Kyle Cook injury away from being a big question mark on the interior line. Or a Bobbie Williams injury or non resign away from being mediocre at best at Guard.

Also the pick for depth on either line does something else. Well especially on defense it provides an opportunity for another man in the rotation. A 4 man rotation at DE or DT will allow for everyone to stay fresh the entire game. Fresh players play alot smarter, don't take plays off, and are at a lesser risk for injury, which face it is gonna be something the Bengals struggle with every year until a new training staff is hired. So if the 21st pick is an O or D lineman everyone should be fairly happy with that even if it's not the guy you wanted or a sexy pick.
