Player Spotlight: Damain Williams
The Bengals pass offense last season was mediocre at best after Chris Henry was lost for the season. Other than Chad no one produced and that allowed opposing defenses to key in on Chad with double and even triple coverage. In this offseason Antonio Bryant has been brought in and I believe he will do well here in Cincy. He has a yards per catch average of over 15 for his career and should add another viable deep threat. That being said he has been inconsistent throughout his career and there's no guarantee he's going to be a quick fix. Damian Williams could be the most NFL ready WR in this year's draft class. A 3rd WR could go a long way to getting the Bengals offense back on track.
Damian Williams comes from a pro style offense at USC. Due to this he shouldn't have much trouble fitting in to the NFL game. He is a polished route runner and runs better routes than anyone in this years draft. He gets off the line very quickly. He can create seperation easily on all the underneath routes. Has great hands and does a good job looking the ball all the way into his hands. Does a good job using his hands to catch the ball all the way into his body. One of the best college WR's i've ever seen at catching the ball in traffic. Has amazing focus and keys in on the ball. Is very good with the ball in his hands, has the ability to make defenders miss. He has return ablilities adding to his value.
Williams is average size and has average hands. He gets good initial burst but lacks elite top end speed. He has trouble consistently getting seperation downfield. He is not a great leaper and sometimes mistimes his jumps. Sometimes he struggles against the jam and takes too long to get into his routes. Needs to add some upper body strength to help get off the line and to help him with his below average blocking.
Damian Williams ran a 4.52 forty and that was about what was expected. WR's don't need to run great 40's to make it in the NFL. He can create seperation with his good route running and could be a good fit to start as the Bengals number 3 WR. He'd be a good weapon for Palmer to use on 3rd downs to move the chains. Also he's very good at catching the WR screen and gaining big chunks of yards which will cause the defense to come up and not be able to sit back in coverage deep against Chad and Bryant. If Williams is available when the Bengals are on the clock in the 2nd he could very likely be the pick and would be excellent value at that spot.
