PostHeaderIcon Player Spotlight: Jason Pierre-Paul

Early last season life was good, Antwan Odom was getting anywhere from 2-5 sacks a game. The Bengals had a new rookie Defensive End with all the physical tools to be a pro bowler in this league. And the Bengals as a whole were getting after the QB like he just slapped their sister. They were rolling with a 4 game winning streak, 3 in a row against division rivals, and had the Texans coming to town with a game that they should win to get to 5-1. That game things began to come unglued, Odom ruptured his Achilles tendon and the pass rush suffered the rest of the year. Fast forward to today, there's a draft prospect out there that has all the potential tools to be an elite pass rusher in the NFL and has gotten DeMarcus Ware comparisons. To top it off there's a slim chance he could end up falling to the Bengals due to the fact he's raw in talent.

Jason Pierre-Paul is extremely green but his upside is tremendous. His explosiveness off the line is what makes him such a highly thought of prospect. He has one of the quickest first steps of any defensive lineman to ever come into the NFL. He looks like what the prototypical Defensive End should look like. He's tall and ripped and has been clocked in the 4.5's in the forty. For someone weighing 270 lbs that is an amazing time. He does have a variety of different moves at his disposal. He comes out of his stance low allowing for leverage and good explosion. Has a knack for getting a jump on the snap. Pierre-Paul is an unbelievable athlete, especially for someone his size and he's got the frame to put on another 20 lbs.

The negatives, basically his entire run game defense is going to need taught to him and worked on. At times he seemed uninterested in defending the run. He doesn't hold up well to double teams. Yeah his entire run defense is going to need a years worth of work. Rushing the passer he has all the physical tools but needs to learn how to properly use them. He needs to work on keeping O lineman from engaging him by using his hands. He has to start playing with a full motor every play and finishing every play. Sometimes when he gets engaged he basically gives up on the play. While you don't want any players giving up on plays I don't think it's because he's disinterested but more because he doesn't have the know how to get off blocks. His form on tackling will also need work as sometimes he lunges.

His coaches have said that he's willing to put in the work, last season was basically his first season as a DE. He's very green and it's gonna be a year or two before he's a 3 down player in this league. The team that takes him is gonna have to have a DE that can defend the run and allow JPP to be a situational pass rusher until he shows development against the run. I think he would work with the Bengals, the defensive coaches have done a very good job developing players over the last few years. Plus there are alot of veterans all along the D line to show JPP the ropes and help him with his development. Both his physical and maturity development. He would still be of use as a rookie against the pass and would add depth on the line. I wouldn't be upset with this pick at all, especially if the DeMarcus Ware comparisons come to fruition, and I got those comparisons from an NFL Scout.
