Quarterback
Could the Bengals take a Quarterback in the 1st round of the 2011 draft? If Carson doesn't perform this year with all the added weapons it may be time to think about it. Even if he does have a big season the Bengals could be looking to groom a replacement for when Carson retires. Another thing that would do is provide insurance in case Carson goes down they would have another 1st round pick at backup that could step in and take over.
Next year's QB class has a lot more talent than the 2010 class did. There are 3 players that currently have a 1st round grade Jake Locker from Washington, Andrew Luck from Stanford, and Ryan Mallett from Arkansas. As of now Locker and Luck look to be top 5 picks, if the Bengals are picking top 5 then Palmer didn't perform and it's time to take one of them. Mallett could be a mid to late 1st rounder at this point, but will need some work as he isn't as NFL ready as the other two and doesn't have as big of an arm.
Quarterback is the most important position on the field and even if Palmer has a great season and the Bengals are picking towards the end of the 1st round I would have no problem if the Bengals packaged some picks and moved up to take Locker or Luck. It'd probably take our 1st,2nd, and 2012 1st to get up there and have an opportunity to get one of them, but in my opinion that'd be worth it if for just to have a talented backup that could come in and win if Palmer went down. I think we can all agree if Palmer went down this coming season the Bengals are done. Then having a QB that sits for a few years behind a good QB will increase his odds of being good to great when he gets to start.
It's an unlikely scenario as players that go that high usually want to start at minimum by their 2nd season and people would be calling for that QB to start. If I was in their shoes I'd probably want to play also, but to have my odds for success increase I'd be willing to sit for a few years if that's what it took.
Lets take a look at the 2 QB's. First Jake Locker, he's probably more polished than Luck is at this point. Locker has good arm strenght and good accuracy. He has a very quick release, which is always important in the NFL, that's why Tebow is going to have a hard time starting until he gets his release fixed. Locker has great footwork and good speed for his size. He's a threat to take off running with the ball, he probably won't be allowed as NFL teams don't like their QB's to run very often. But he will be able to create more time with his ability to move and on key 3rd downs he'll be able to get the 1st with his feet if he needs to. The most important thing though is Locker is an excellent leader at Washington. His coaches and the media rave about how good of a leader he is.
Andrew Luck isn't quite as polished as Locker, but I think he has more upside. He has great arm strength a bit better than Locker and I believe his accuracy is a little better. He has an unusual release point, but he is effective with it and can still get the ball out of his hands very quick. He also is mobile, not to the point of Locker, but is just as good throwing on the run as Locker is. He is an intelligent player and makes good decisions he just needs more experience. Luck is bigger than Locker which will help him to see over those big offensive lineman. If I had my pick on the two I'd take Luck with the more upside. Especially the Bengals who will not need him to start right away.
